According to Irish and Scottish folklore, Cailleach Bhur was the goddess of winter. She would appear on Samhain and disappear on Beltane. She is often depicted as an old blue faced hag with white hair. She is the guardian of deer and wolves and other animals. It was said her staff would freeze the ground with every stamp. She is also called "Veiled One", "Death of Winter", "The Bringer of Snow and Disease" and (of course) "Daughter of the Pale Winter Sun".
